Have you ever wondered where students at the Tshwane
University of Technology disappear to on weekends? Well, you will find them at
the North campus football ground glued to their sits while spectating the
moment.
Soccer players from numerous teams namely Ezimnandi FC,
Madrid, AmaBen 10 and the list goes on together with coaches have come up with
an initiative aimed to bring unity and get the youth off the streets. They host
soccer tournaments which last up to two to three weeks depending on the number
of teams playing at the time and what is on the stake. These soccer players
[students] from different faculties saw a need to bring about unity amongst
students of TUT in North Campus. According to Sam Mdletshe, a language practise
master’s student (26), who coaches AmaBen
10, the significance that these tournaments have is great and ideal. ‘‘The
games that we as coaches host on weekends are essential since they help keep
our peers fit and keep them busy away from crime and substance abuse’’, he said.
He also commended the support from spectators as these included both males and
females including some of TUT’s very own lecturers.

With chanting and Imizabalazo
(struggle) songs you would hear them sing to show enthusiasm. Both young and
old, likewise in one voice you would hear them whining if a certain player
missed a goal. United Nations
Human Rights and Sport for Development and Peace Framework stated that, “the
practice of physical education and sport is a fundamental right for all.” It
implied that we all could take part in sports as something that is profound and
beneficial to one’s health. All members who wish to participate in these soccer
tournaments are highly encouraged to take part whereby men will be separated
from boys.
