April 7th marks World Health awareness day. To recognize this day, Ekurhuleni ward 45 in partnership with NXT Marketing held a health awareness programme on this day.

The programme being a first of its kind was held at Vosloorus civic centre and is said to last for the entire month of April. The residents of Kathorus were exposed to a number of free check-ups. Among others being eye testing, health screening, HIV & AIDS testing, blood pressure tests, diabetic tests and the endless list goes on.

An estimation of 110 people availed themselves on the day, both young and old. The success of the programme relied mostly upon different stakeholders which contributed to raising awareness in substance abuse. In addition, these were: City of Ekurhuleni Health Department (High blood pressure, Pap smear & Sugar Level tests), Sukuma Sakhe Development (Drugs & alcohol abuse awareness), Tshepo Women Help Centre (HIV & Sugar Level tests) and lastly Tsohang Youth Project.

Tshepo Women Help Centre’s counsellor Jeaneth Nkuna appealed that people ought to avail themselves in such initiatives. ‘‘We encourage everyone to come and get tested, know your status while there’s time as you will then be treated’’, she said.
